What is Bara?  

Bara (薔薇?), also known by the term wasei-eigo "Men's Love" (メンズラブ Menzurabu?) or "ML", is a Japanese slang term for a genre of male homoerotic anime, manga, and illustrated publications. Bara is considered a gay subgenre of hentai, generally created by and for gay men. The bara genre arose in the 1960s in fetish magazines featuring homosexual illustrations and text. In addition to bara manga, also called gei komi (ゲイ　コミ? gay comics), illustrations and prints, there are several bara erotic video games, as well as novels and cartoons. The bara is primarily a Japanese phenomenon, with limited-run publications in the West, although it has also gained dissemination through scanlations by gay internet communities.
The bara can vary in visual style and storyline, but generally depicts stocky, masculine-looking men, who can range in complexion and amount of body hair from muscular, athletic men to bear-like (熊 kuma?), which it differentiates it from the yaoi genre that depicts slender, youthful-looking men. In addition, the yaoi, despite capturing male homosexual relationships, is mainly aimed at the female public, while the bara is mainly aimed at the gay public. Yaoi presents idealized bishōnen that follow the formula of pairing a dominant character, seme, with a submissive one, uke,1 often focusing on the feelings of platonic relationships. On the other hand, the bara, in addition to romanticism, generally shows explicit sex between men (sometimes even violent), some representing more "realistic" relationships, even containing autobiographical stories.
